Thursday October 20, 2011 Testimonial: Dr. Sherif Ma'amon, National Cancer Institute
The NCI new operation suite (OR) was recently renovated to a high quality theater capable of handling the ever increasing complexity of cancer surgery.
It is to be noticed that the coordinated effort between NCI management and We Owe it to Egypt foundation made this possible with state of the art equipment for the OR and Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
The OR and ICU were officially opened on July 2010. The current five operation rooms were built with high technology ceilings and floors, crucial for easy cleaning and provide antibacterial effect. All rooms are also provided with HIPA filters which are special filters to maintain the entire environment clean from all contaminants.
The start up of the new suite had several challenges; mainly maintenance and efficiency. I would like to take the chance to thank the team of the We Owe it to Egypt foundation for their continued support and efforts to achieve a high quality model for operation rooms. It was clear from day one that the ultimate aim was to implement quality standards particularly in the following areas:
- Bacteria free environment integral for surgical procedures in immune compromised cancer patients
- Efficient cleaning systems
- Improved performance for medical personnel
- Patient safety and comfort: this is the primary focus and is to be achieved via proper patient circulation, comfortable environment and minimizing waiting time.
Over the last five months, the following effort was coordinated between WOTE and OR management:
- An outsourced cleaning company was contracted to carry on the cleaning of the OR and ICU. They were carefully monitored and unfortunately the first company faulted and was immediately replaced.
- Maintaining the environment clear from foreign contaminants by controlling all exits with air curtains
- Temperature controlled cabinets to keep all drugs at optimum status which is particularly important for anesthetic drugs
- Continuous auditing of the administration procedures with direct monitoring.
- Patient satisfaction was assessed by direct questionnaire.
A total of 1,978 surgical procedures were carried out during that period. They varied in complexity from simple procedures (like mastectomies) to more advanced and sophisticated ones (microvascular procedures, joint replacements)
The infection rate was within international standards (this refers to surgical site infection).
As I am currently leaving the management to a new administration, I must stress the importance of the continuous effort of We Owe ot to Egypt foundation team in providing support for this model OR.
